Global M&A Deal Value Down 15% in First Half
And global M&A deal volumes fell 8% from the second half of 2022 but 14% year over year, according to PwC.
Recession fears and still-rising interest rates in the first half of 2023 caused global merger and acquisition activity to stay relatively cool.
Global M&A deal volumes fell by 8% from the prior quarter and 14% from the prior year (second half of 2022). By deal value, activity dropped 15% quarterly and 40% year over year, according to data from PwC and Refinitiv. (850 words) Read more here…

ChatGPT Confirms Data Breach, Raising Security Concerns
When ChatGPT and similar chatbots first became widely available, the concern in the cybersecurity world was how AI technology could be used to launch cyberattacks. In fact, it didn’t take very long until threat actors figured out how to bypass the safety checks to use ChatGPT to write malicious code.
It now seems that the tables have turned. Instead of attackers using ChatGPT to cause cyber incidents, they have now turned on the technology itself. OpenAI, which developed the chatbot, confirmed a data breach in the system that was caused by a vulnerability in the code’s open-source library, according to Security Week. FP Dealmakers: Rise in people 'just walking away' from transactions as M&A flow slows in first half
Tom Redekopp, managing director of the business law group at Dentons in Toronto, knew there was a seismic shift underway in mergers and acquisitions traffic when deals started abruptly falling apart midstream earlier this year.
Rather than the usual pace of one deal per year stalling out, transactions were suddenly being abandoned on a monthly basis.
“I think it’s like four deals dying in the last four months,” Redekopp said. The cross-border M&A specialist said factors such as rising interest rates and turbulent earnings were in some cases combining to change the acquirer’s mind. (1076 words) Read more here…

REIT M&A activity picks up in Q2 2023 after 4 all-stock merger deals
After a slow two quarters, M&A activity involving public US equity real estate investment trusts picked up in the second quarter with several merger agreements.
While elevated interest rates and an associated higher cost of debt slowed down take-private deals in the REIT sector, all-stock transactions remained prominent.
Four REIT merger deals totaling $24.27 billion in transaction value were announced in the second quarter. Combined with the $868 million privatization of INDUS Realty Trust Inc. announced in the first quarter, M&A transaction value totaled $25.13 billion in the first half of 2023, down 62.4% from a high of $66.86 billion in the same period in 2022, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data.
